THE SON OF VYASA
You all know the
story about how Bhishma took a vow that he will never become the king so that
Satyavati’s father would allow Bhishma’s father, Shantanu, to marry her.
In some
years Satyavati and Shantanu had two sons Chitrangada and Vichitravirya.
Chitrangada
was a great warrior but died in a long 3 year war with the Gandharvas.
Vichitravirya who was crowned was very young. After some years he died because
of tuberculosis. His both wives Ambika and Ambalika did not have any heir for
the throne. Sage Vyasa who had finished a very long time in meditation was
invited to Bhishma’s court.
When he
arrived in the court Bhishma asked for help from Vyasa that both the queens
would get a baby boy.
After a
yagna he first saw Ambika who got scared looking at his ugly face. So Pandu was
born to Ambika who was weak and always afraid. In the same time Vyasa went to
see Ambalika she closed her eyes and so she got a son, Dhritarastra, who was
blind. When Vyasa was passing by he saw the king’s maid as she stood bravely
without getting scared or closing her eyes and soon she gave birth to the one
whose story I am going to write today he was none other than the wise man-
Vidur
Vidur was the prime minister of Hastinapur when
Pandu was the king but when Pandu went to the jungle with his wives and
Dhritarastra was going to be the king Vidur revolted saying that how can a
blind man become a king. This disappointed Dhritarastra and he never forgot
that.
Vidur was the wisest man on Earth as he was the
avatar of Yamaraja the god of death but he had got a curse that no one would
pay heed to his advice.
In the infamous dice game he had said
Duryodhana that it was not fair to take everything from the Pandavas but
Duryodhana abused Vidur. Dhritarastra who was hearing everything went to
Duryodhana to tell him to stop everything and apologize to Vidur but then he
remembered the thing that Vidur said in the Coronation.
In the war Vidur decided not to participate as
he was the son of a sage and a maid. He wanted to take the side of the Pandavas
but it was his Dharma to stay in the side of the Kauravas.
After the war he went to the jungle with
Dhritarastra, Gandhari and Kunti. Over there he lived for some years and died
in the forest fire.
Hope you liked the story.
Let me come up with another interesting character about whom you might not have
heard of. Until next time. THANK YOU!
